Common is the lingua franca of Gloriana (and is a version of English, at least in English localizations of the game, but can be others depending on each game's localization). In every location the Hero visits, he will find that either everyone civilized speaks Common, or at least that enough people will speak Common that he can get by.

In most cities, merchants will speak Common, even if the citizen populace doesn't speak it generally.

Many realms, even those who have accepted Common as the official language, will still contain traces of their local language, either through accents or through naming.

Behind the Scenes[]

  • Common/English appears on signs, and other text seen in graphics. It's not known if these graphics are modified for international releases.
  • English as the Unknown Hero’s main language is mentioned in QFG2. Griffin/English phrase book.
  • Common is first mentioned in the Famous Explorer's Correspondence Course guide as one of the languages spoken in Tarna.
  • Common is an analogue to American English. In international versions of the Quest for Glory series, Common can be considered an analogue to that version's language.
  • In How To Be A Hero Novels and later materials Silmarian appears to be the Common language (or at least Silmarian maybe a creole hybrid akin to historical Lingua Franca a mixture of Italian with French, Greek, Arabic, and Spanish, formerly used in the Levant. In Gloriana it took over because Albion never became an empire or major trade merchants (defeating the Spanish Armada), like they did on earth.
