He was seeking fruit so that he may 'mellow his mead-horn'. He's willing to trade a Glowing Gem for enough fruit to fill up his prodigious fists. Fifty small small apples from the Alpinehurst Farmer's Mart in Spielburg Town will satisfy the Hero's end of the deal, and Brauggi will yield up the gem and then start back home.

Brauggi can be attacked, but he always defeats the Hero. Brauggi also can use some magic that will prevent the Hero from attacking him from a distance.
In the original EGA version, asking 3 questions he doesn't know about, he leaves, making the game unwinnable. In later version, he reappears when you come back later.
