The Aces and Eights Tavern is the main drinking establishment in the Spielburg Town. It is featured in Quest for Glory 1.

Background[]

The tavern is situated at the western edge of town, at the end of Tavern Street, which is off Market Street. The establishment is marked by a sign with a beer stein on it.

Inside, the tavern is a seedy one-room building. It appears to be poorly kept and not very clean. The bar is along the far wall, behind which are large casks which hold the town's supply of alcoholic beverages. The most prominent feature of the tavern is the center cask which has a motif of a dragon's head on it, which is the cask that holds the "house specialty", Dragon's Breath.

The tavern's inhospitable nature is largely in place to distract from the building's true purpose: to serve as a front for the Spielburg Thieves' Guild. Both the Bartender and Crusher are aware of the Guild and are complicit in its activities.

The Tavern is open 24 hours a day.

In-Game Interactions[]

Prices
Ale 1 silver
Troll's Sweat 5 silvers
Dragon's Breath 25 silvers

The Hero will have few interactions with the tavern itself. Even a Thief will use the building as little more than a go-between for the Thieves' Guild.

If the Hero decides to drink, he should be aware that either three mugs of ale or a single mug of Troll's Sweat will cause him to pass out drunk and be left outside, where he will find that his money is gone. He will also lose five Puzzle Points for this.

WARNING: If the Hero drinks Dragon's Breath, he will die.

After talking to Bruno at the Gate, he will tell the Hero that he should try Dragon's Breath. However if the Hero gives alms to Sam, he will warn him not to try Dragon's Breath.

Beneath the center stool at the bar, the Hero will find a crumpled Piece of Paper. This will be a note between two people named "B". At the beginning of the game, the note will state the danger of using this drop point. After the Hero returns from the Kobold Cave, a second note will be in place, calling a meeting at the Archery Range.

Lastly, a Thief will access the Spielburg Thieves' Guild from the tavern. To enter, the Hero will need to give the password, which he can learn in the Alley from Slink:

Note that a character without Thief skills will be forcibly ejected from the tavern if he attempts to give the password.

Trivia[]

  • "Aces and eights" is a poker hand colloquially known as the "dead man's hand".[1]
